Treatment

The medication should be started 3 days before your expected period, you should take one tablet three times a day to delay your period for up to 14 days.

Period delay refers to the intentional postponement of menstruation for non-medical reasons, often for convenience during holidays, sporting events, or significant life occasions. While natural variations in menstrual cycles can cause an unplanned delay, the term is commonly used in the context of using hormonal medication to delay an expected period. This is achieved by manipulating the body’s hormonal balance to prevent the normal shedding of the uterine lining. Period delay is a temporary measure and does not provide contraception or resolve any underlying menstrual disorders.

Period delay is typically managed through the use of hormone-based medications. The most commonly used option in the UK is norethisterone, a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. It is usually taken three times a day, starting about three days before the expected period and continued for up to 17 days. Menstruation generally resumes two to three days after stopping the tablets. Norethisterone is suitable for most healthy women aged 16 and over, but a consultation is recommended to rule out contraindications such as a history of blood clots, liver disease, or hormone-sensitive cancers. Some women may also use continuous combined oral contraceptive pills (COCP) to skip or delay periods, but this method is more suitable for those already on the pill under guidance from their healthcare provider.

While norethisterone and similar treatments are generally well-tolerated, they can cause side effects in some individuals. Common side effects include bloating, breast tenderness, mood changes, and spotting or breakthrough bleeding. Less commonly, women may experience headaches, nausea, or altered libido. Because norethisterone is a hormone, it can also increase the risk of blood clots, particularly in individuals with other risk factors such as smoking, obesity, or a family history of thrombosis. These treatments should not be used as a regular means of menstrual control without medical oversight. It is important to have a proper consultation before starting treatment, especially for women with underlying health conditions or those taking other medications.
